The Slip Knot
Our first stich isn’t technically and “stich” perse, but it is crucial in starting your crocheting journey as it is the ultimate first step to any yarn masterpiece.
You will create a slip knot to attach your yarn to your hook. We use a slip knot and not your average shoelace knot in order to be able to adjust its tightness.
- Start by taking your yarn and making a circle with your end piece being on top (both where your circle meets and being the top piece).
- Make sure you have a long enough end piece for room to work with for the rest of this knot.
- Next, cross your end piece straight down, going over the backside of the circle now.
- Now pull the middle section of your end piece straight up through the middle of the circle, while securing the very tip of the end so it doesn’t pull through with the rest of the yarn.
- Hold the two ends (your end piece and the section leading to your yarn) firmly. As you hold those firmly, pull that middle section up until the knot is formed.

You now have a slip knot! You can adjust it by pulling the end strand or opening the circle.
The Chain Stitch
The chain stitch is your next step from the slip knot in any beginner crochet project. It is the basis of your project.
- With the slip knot on your hook, wrap the yarn over your hook above (closer to the hook) the slip knot.
- Pull your hook down through the slip knot’s opening, keeping your wrapped yarn under the hook.

You have successfully done a chain! Do this repeatedly until you have your desired length/per your instructions.
The Slip Stitch
The slip stitch is essential for attaching desired parts or crossing over corners, and even more. It is a very important part of crocheting.
- Putting your hook in the desired stitch, wrap the yarn over your hook above the two loops.
- Pull your hook through both loops.
